Five Things Friday 4/10/2015

So glad that Carla did this post today! So I “borrowed” her cute picture and will share my five things!

  1. The white van was treated to yet another set of repairs yesterday. A new heater hose and  air conditioner compressor. This depleted our emergency fund by $450. I am hoping to be able to add a little bit  back to the fund this month but even more so am praying that this is the end of repairs at least  for a couple of months.
  2. I was driving the van to cheerleading last night and on the way home suffered an allergy attack. After a little bit of thinking, realized that it was most likely due to “dust” that had accumulated in the air condition system. This morning, Matt spent another $10 to replace the cabin air filters. I am so frustrated with this van at the moment.
  3. I did have a major success in saving for Groceries. Our menu plan called for Baked Potato on Thursday.  I realized when getting out the potatoes that I still had about a fourth of bag of potatoes that were starting to spout. In order not to waste food, I filled the crockpot with potatoes, used the remaining ones after dinner to make mashed potatoes. One 2 cup set I will use for “shepherd pie” this weekend and the others (2)  are frozen for later use. I also started a crock pot with “potato corn chowder” which will be a second meal for the weekend and then at least two additional meals in the future. So I have managed to cook a minimum of 5 meals in one day using crock pots and food on hand.
  4.  I am working toward a goal of significantly lowering our grocery cost for the month. To accomplish this I want to stick to shopping at CVS and Aldi, no Costco trips. So far for the month, we have spent $38 on groceries. The goal is to spend less than $50, purchase some landscape items and plants for the square foot garden with another $200 and use the remainder to now cover the unexpected van expense.
  5.  In NC on Saturday, the temperature is suppose to be in the low 70s and sunny so we are planning to spend the day working on the Square Foot Garden. I hope to post pictures of all the yard tomorrow.

March in Review

Blogging:  Goal: 15 per month Goal Met!  I think I have finally got my groove with blogging!

Weight: Goal:  Met and maintain weight of 175. This goal will be considered met each month that weight loss is achieved and once this weight is achieved, each month maintained is considered achieved.  Fail again!

Spiritual-  Goal. I want to spend time reading and or studying the Bible at least 5 days a week for the year. Doing better but still not achieved

Personal Goals: Achieved 1 of 3

Financial Goals:  Achieved 4 of 4

We are continuing to make small steady progress in this area. Income wise this was an awesome month as we received an expected boast. I am also hoping to keep on track during April with our Beach trip.

1.  Pay off all debit by December  2015, except for mortgage.
a. JC Penny- 79.32– . DONE
b. Home Depot-     $270 a month Payment.  Will be paid off in July Goal met!
c. American Express   – pay $2300 this month Goal Met!
d. Personal Loan (used to purchase van) .The current scheduled payment is $217 a month with this scheduled to be paid off in December 2015. Goal Met!

2. Emergency Fund to $2000.  Placed $100 in for the month Goal Met!

. 3. Groceries: Spend $600 a month . Currently at $741 for the month.  No real reason for this except we choose to purchase some steaks and convenient foods and this was a 5 week month. Hopefully better on track next month especially with the need to purchase plants for the garden and a trip for meat in our near future. Fail

4. Gas: Spend $400 a month with any remaining to be move to Auto fund for repairs.  We need to make another repair on the white van this month which cost  $157.  We also have been travelling alot both for cheerleading and for medical appointments. With the repair we ended the month with a total of $474. Because of some extra income we did not need to dip in our emergency fund for this repair so officially this is Goal Met!

Disney- I have decided to add this just to be accountable. This month, I have been selling items online in preparation for our physical yard sale in April. I have been really surprised and excited to see the money come in. I have been able to purchase a stroller that we plan to take and use in Disney, 2 autograph books and a dress.

Looking ahead to April- First is going to be to control with grocery budget. I am hoping to eat out of the fridge and freezer for the first 3 weeks of the month prior to our beach trip. I am positive we will at that point have to head to Costco. I will also need to purchase live plants during the last two weeks of the month depending on the weather. I am setting  $100 budget for this which means that I need our grocery spending to stay under $500 for the month. Next is Gas- in April, I am already aware of 3 small repairs that are needed. I am hoping that gas prices will stay low enough to accomplish these repairs in addition to covering our regular expense of gas. Finally, I have reworked our budget and have added a line for saving in our emergency fund. I am so happy to accomplish this goal.

Random Thursday Thoughts

  • We are traveling again today. First headed to Matthews for eye appointments for all the kids. Next to IKEA to enjoy some window shopping. Finally back to Winston-Salem to pick out new glasses for the girls. I am estimating that we will be travelling over 150 miles and eating out at least 2 meals.
  • I am continue to list items on several Facebook groups in order to sell them. So far all the transactions have worked out very smoothly. I only have one more item that I am planning to list. The real yard sale is scheduled for the first weekend in April. I am planning to post this both online and in our local paper. I have already made $300 and my goal for all the yard sale is now $500. This is a lofty goal but I am hoping that it works out. If not then I will have a huge donation for the year to go to Goodwill and I have managed to really clean out!
  • After travelling tomorrow, our lives should slow down to a more normal hetic pace. It is a full month until we will be travelling again for cheerleading. That trip is so much fun and I am already looking forward to it. Myrtle Beach is always my favorite spot to visit.
  • Currently our budgets are right on schedule. We had to make a small repair to the white van again this past week but if all goes as well we will stay under our $400 gas budget for the month. The lower price of gas is certainly a nice thing and has helped our budget tremendously so far this year. The grocery budget is also doing well for the month with $170 left in it. I am really trying to clean out the freezers as much as possible with plans to start filling them again in May with freshly frozen fruits and vegetables.
  • My goals for the weekend include: yard work and trying to make homemade granola.

Enough randomness for today!

5 Things Friday!3/13/2015

1. I decide to post to an online yard sale yesterday, these are all items that I was gathering to sale anyway so I figured I would just get a head start.  If everyone arrives and picks up the items they have claimed I will have made $250! This is going to help with our Disney trip!  We had decided that the first $100 would be used for a stroller, so that takes a chuck but I am super excited to see extra money coming in!

2.Matt is working tonight, tomorrow night and Tuesday night… three nights a month is nothing to complain about but main it just seems like a lot at this moment. It probably has to do with the fact that I worked late and am tired but I was so glad  to put the kids to bed.

3. Our new to us white van continues to need small repairs. Yesterday, we took it to the radiator shop and they were able to fix a small leak that was causing the van to smoke especially when sitting in traffic. I don’t like sitting in the school line with smoke coming out from under the hood!  We are hoping to be able to pay for this repair out of our gas fund for the month. It will leave us stretching a tank for a little over a week but it would also mean that our Emergency Fund is able to stay in tact

4. After a huge trip to Costco last week we have $200 left in our grocery fund. I am hoping to spend half this amount for the month but if some excellent sales come along I may just stay under budget and be happy.

5.We are travelling again on Sunday. This will be the second Sunday in a row that we have missed church. Other than during our annual beach trip each year, I can not tell you the last time that we have missed two Sundays in a row!

Paying for Disney

I talked about our projected budget for our Disney world trip in this post.  A more interesting and better question is okay where do you plan on getting $7340 to pay for the trip. Today, I am going to answer that question to the best of my ability. I will be honest up front and tell you that we don’t have the entire amount figured out. Over the past couple of months I have been searching and looking and hopefully learning a lot. These are real numbers so feel free to help Fund me but if not I am confident that by November we will have the trip paid for.

At the beginning of the year Matt was able to gain a contract for 3 new small websites. The entire amount for these sites is being used to pay for Disney. When all three sites are complete and paid that provides us with our deposit of $1500. Next up Matt has started working in the cheerleading booster club to pay for most of cheerleading related expenses.  I have a line item in our budget to cover these cost. Starting in March I am converting this line from cheerleading to Disney.$1600.

Our budget also currently has budget amount each month for gifts and clothing, We have discussed at length with the kids that we are not spending much on Birthdays this year in fact, I am planning to give the kids items for use at Disney for each of their birthday. This should add another $1600 to the fund.

I am paid on a bi-weekly schedule, this means that I receive 26 paychecks a year. I base our budget on  2 paychecks a month or 24 checks a year. By doing so, I will receive an “extra” check in the month of July. My plan is to place $1000 of this check to help to pay for Disney.

After doing the math, that still leaves $1640 to be paid. We already have planned an yard sale to help a small amount.  Other plans include saving money from other areas of the budget and our goal is for Matt to grow his business in the next six months which should cover this additional expense.

One of the main reason I am so excited for this trip is that it will be entirely paid for prior to our arrival. We will be able to enjoy! Do you have any suggestions for helping to fund the trip?

5 Things Friday

1. The kids actually went to school everyday this week! And we had an activity every night this week as well. The really exciting news is that we managed to accomplish this with no eating out dinner!

2. We are headed out of town tomorrow for a cheerleading competition on Sunday. Typically we would not get a hotel room for an event that is only 2 hours away; however given the time change this weekend in addition to needing to arrive dressed and ready by 7:30am, we decide a nice room and pool to play in on Saturday night would make the weekend much more enjoyable for all of us!

3. With exactly 6 days into the month, we have already spent over half of our grocery budget with a huge trip to Costco yesterday. My goal/plan is to keep the rest of the month on the low side with only trips to Aldi for fresh veggie and produce.

4. Some unexpected income this month has allowed me to get our Emergency Fund up to date, purchase some wants for both myself and Matt in addition to paying an extra pay to our debit this month as well.

5. We are planning on planting broccoli tomorrow to start our square foot garden. Matt has also agreed to build a composting box this spring to help support our efforts!

February in Review

Blogging:  Goal: 15 per month Goal Met!  The snow really help to get me motivated for the month!

Weight: Goal:  Met and maintain weight of 175. This goal will be considered met each month that weight loss is achieved and once this weight is achieved, each month maintained is considered achieved.  Frustrated is the only word I can think about saying with this. Fail

Spiritual-  Goal. I want to spend time reading and or studying the Bible at least 5 days a week for the year. One of the reasons I need to be reminded of my goals each month. Fail

Personal Goals: Achieved 1 of 3

Financial Goals:  Achieved 4 of 4

I am really excited to be able to say that February has been the best month for use financial in a long time. Matt has significantly increased his income and we are exactly on budget for the month of February.

1.  Pay off all debit by December  2015, except for mortgage.
a. JC Penny- 79.32– . DONE
b. Home Depot-     $210 a month Payment.  Will be paid off in July Goal met!
c. American Express   – pay $1400 this month Goal Met!

Currently at $616 for the month. I chose to do some shopping on Friday instead of waiting till Sunday so I am declaring this Goal Met!

4. Gas: Spend $400 a month with any remaining to be move to Auto fund for repairs.  Gas prices hit the lowest price they have been in several years at the beginning of the month. We took advantage and filled the trunk in addition to our gas cans that we use especially during the summer months. We have continued to make some small repairs to both of our vehicles which I have taken from this budget as well. The fact that the kids have been out of school for basically two week also kept our expenses low. Total spent for the month is $398 Goal Met!

5 Things Friday 2/20/2015

1. It has been extremely cold here the last several days, the kids have been out of school due to the weather for the entire week. Last night the pipes to our bathroom froze, luckily they did not burst but this will be a major headache to repair in the spring. I expect our electric and water bill to be much higher than normal. Matt called someone to come look at our heat pump next week because it simply is not keeping the house warm. We woke up to a temperature of 60 this morning. NO FUN!

2. We anticipate small repairs on our vehicles because they are older: however this month we have spent over $100 on parts for these small repairs. I am thankful that Matt is doing all the labor but I had hoped to be able to save some of our gas budget this month, instead it is going into parts.

3. We have received both our tax returns now. I am thankful that this extra income has been able to help us reserve our rooms at Disney World. I am planning a full post on the cost associated with this trip and ways we are saving for it very soon. tomorrow.

4. I should be able to control the grocery budget this month and keep it below our $600. Currently, it has $94 left in it with one week left in the month. I know that I will be shopping at CVS on Sunday but otherwise I hope to avoid any other purchases. This past week I have made several trips to CVS and ending up spending $50 on soda and another $10 on make up but this should not be the case for next week. It was fun to see a couple of receipts that showed 100% savings.

5. Because of the weather, my work hours have been crazy. I will admit to enjoying not going into work on Tuesday or Wednesday until 10 am and getting off prior to 3pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday was a rare treat. I ended up working only 23 hours so between the past two week I have taken 14 hours of vacation time. I try to save these hours for the summer or events that I need to attend with the kids.

Extra/Entertainment Expenses

This is a category or should I say categories that I budget for each  month but after lots of research don’t find much information about.  Currently, I am using a modified envelope system which entails cash for some expenses and separate saving accounts for most others. I love Capital One because it allows me multiple saving accounts and one checking account with a debit card which I can move money into and spend easily. The one downside to my Capital One accounts is that it can take up to a week for money to move from my regular account into the capital one accounts.  I promised to use real numbers this year so here we go.

Currently I have 2 cash envelopes at home. The first is “hair fund” this covers hair cuts for everyone and color for myself. We budget $40 a month. Currently this is being paid by Matt’s business.  We don’t always spend the $40 but this builds and makes it less painful when I need color. This works well for us as the hair dresser lives less than a mile down the road so we can schedule ahead or on the fly and have the money easily available. The second envelope is for “piano” both Lily and Kendall are currently taking lessons once a week. The cost for the lesson is $20 a week.  I do have this as a line item in our budget but usually supply the envelope once a month or use cash from cell phone payments so I don’t have to make a trip to the bank. We purchased a keyboard last summer for $100 and have had to purchase 2 sets of book. Lily is starting on the second set this week.  We are currently going to keep all the books with the goal for Zach to begin in two year with only the cost of lessons to be added.

At this point,  I have five separate accounts with Capital One. The least used account is “Auto Fund”. My initial plan was to use this account to save for car repairs and/or the purchase of a new to us vehicle; however this has not worked out. We did purchase a new to us van in January but have been using part of our “gas budget” to make small repairs. I may, in the future, eliminate this fund because it is much simpler for me to use the gas budget for small repairs. If the need for a large major repair would occur this would most likely come out of our emergency fund.  I am still paying on the personal loan we used to purchase a van last year. Currently, it is scheduled for pay off in December of this year, I may start to save this payment amount for future vehicle purchased so for the time being it is sitting with less than $1 in the account.  “Clothing and Gifts” are designated for the “checking account”  My logic is that these are very fluid accounts and need to be accessed easily for purchases. My budget is $100 a month for each of these accounts. After April, I plan to switch the Gift budget over to
“Disney”, more on this later. “Cheerleading” is by far the most expensive activity that we participate in. Currently both Lily and Kendall are part of a competition squad. I budget $150 a month, however this needs to be increased to $200 in the future. This fund covers the cost of tuition each month, competition fees and uniforms. It does not cover our expenses such as hotel and/or food when attending competitions. Last year I was able to save and allotted a certain amount each month to use for these  completion day expenses however with both girls involved I have not been able to do so. Because of the new job Matt has taken, the plan is to cover all current Cheerleading expenses with this job and place the current budgeted amount of $150 into our Disney Fund and then into a fund to use for expenses on competition day. This fund is a work in progress and is undergoing major changes. My goal is to update this fund and budget in July when things have had a chance to settle down. “Car Insurance and AAA” is not really a entertainment expense but it is a expense that I am budgeting and saving for monthly.  Currently, I place $10 a month to cover our yearly AAA membership and $35 a month to cover our car insurance. The insurance amount is adjusted every six months to reflex the actual amount of our car insurance. The final and newest saving account is “Pool”. We are members of a private swim club that operates from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year.  Our dues allow us access to the pool all summer long. I also use money from this account to help cover the expense of the little kids participating in swim team.  I currently place $45 a month in this account. My goal is to use this same $45 during the months of June, July and August to cover treats such as food and ice cream while at the pool. In the past, we have used grocery money and dinning out money for these treats but I like the idea of having cash and once it is gone then we have to bring our food and drinks from home.

An honest look at where we spent money on entertainment and other extra expenses.  I did not discuss at all our Disney trip but will be sharing our it as well as how we are saving to cover it very soon.

5 Things Friday 2/13/2015

1. I was able to place $50 in our Emergency Fund today!  First time this year! It is at least a start.

2. Matt has started a job that will have him out of the house at least 3 nights/weekend days a month. This is a huge change for us but I know it will definitely help cover our cost. We have been talking for several months now that we have an income problem and this is a way to help solve that problem.

3.Our budgets this month are actually looking really good at this point. We have $165 in gas and $415 in our grocery budget left. We have already purchased a part for the white van that will hopefully be the last for several months but the low gas prices are definitely helping out.

4. I am planning on spending the next couple days inside. The temperatures are the coldest of the year and we have no where to go tomorrow (Saturday) so I hope to finish up some things for church but otherwise enjoy a nice day inside.

5. We booked our trip to Disney World this week!  I am so so excited. We are counting down the days till November.
