5 Things Friday

  1.  We have been at home for a solid week due to icy roads.  I did venture out yesterday to Mocksville for a quick trip to my office and for E doctor’s appointment.  We have huge areas of ice on the roads. Both school districts were closed on Monday and have had four days of remote work days.  We are expecting a snow storm starting tonight and going through Sunday.  I am anticipating more weather closure and delays through Tuesday of next week. We will see how things go.
  2.  I am starting to feel overwhelmed in the foster care process. Plus definitely overwhelmed with day to day stuff.   Today alone, I talked to E’s guardian ad lieu as did he. I had a lengthy conversation with both his caseworker and the caseworker supervisor.  I also had a text conversation with the social worker who does visitations.  In addition, E  had a virtual speech session as well. I also talked with the person who has one of his siblings. I also received and completed a packet of paperwork from a third social worker this one in charge of the licensure process.
  3. In preparation for the upcoming snow event, I had Matt pick up an order from Walmart on Thursday including milk and I did a Dollar General delivery this morning. I did check prices before ordering from DG, the only item that was more expensive at DG was the coffee  K cups.  We are continuing to eat alot of food from our freezers and pantry but we have spent around $500 this month.
  4. To add to the adventure today, I decided to purchase a used futon. We have placed it in our bedroom and it will be a great place for Braxton to sleep when he decides to hang out with us.  Zach and I went and picked it up, he cleared the driveway of most of the ice
  5. One of my goals for the weekend is to get our taxes for 2025 figured out!

 

Beginning of a Journey

This blog has always been my record of life. I have been debating for the past week what and when to share.  I have decided to share my side of this journey so that I can always look back and be yes! God had a plan and purpose.

Foster care and adoption have always had a special place in my heart but I did not know when it would become part of our story.

On Thursday 1/8/2026, I found out that one of my students that I have served for two or three years, was removed from his mother and was sleeping at the DSS office due to no foster placement being available. I offered to take him home. We started the process and everyone was on board. We have all worked together to make this happen.

We picked up E on Saturday morning 1/10 from the DSS office. This past week has been an adventure for sure.   Some facts that complicate things is the he is currently on a modified day due to elopement and safety concerns. He was attending school till 11 am.  Attendance and tardies have significantly impacted his education.  The good news is that his day has been increased to 1pm and he earned his first reward this week.  Lily and Kendall have rearranged their schedules to pick up E from school each day which is a trip that takes an hour and half. Matt is waking up early to help him get dressed each day. Zach has been able to make sure he gets in the car with breakfast each morning and is his go to person for church.  I am dropping him off at school each day before going to work myself.  In addition to trying to arrange all types of medical visits and still keep some sense of normal around here.

We moved some things around and what was my office is now his bedroom.  This actually took many hours and help from friends as well as family.   We have received an outpouring of support from our church family. Not only are they praying for us, we received a bed, enough clothing and shoes for at least six months, and some monetary support as well.

We are not sure how long this journey will last or what the outcome will be but we are commit to show the love of Christ by it.

We are currently considered a non-biological kinship placement which means we are not eligible for a stipend.  Medicaid pays for medical expenses but not for gas or time.  God will provide and protect us!
