Saving on Saturday-11/12/16

This has been a day of beginning and ending for savings around my house. First I will share the beginning. We are planting fruit trees as part of our landscape. I ordered a set of six fruit trees of dwarf size to plant in the back yard. I specifically picked the dwarf size in order to use them as a bounder.  They don’t look like much now but hopefully in five year we will be able to harvest and enjoy some fresh fruit. In case you are wondering we chose two apples up front, followed by two pear, a cherry and peach tree.  The big debate is now do we add one or two more to complete the border.

So now we are at the ending, the weather has really started to feel fall like here. During the past week we have several nights that have gotten cold enough for a frost. Tonight, Saturday, the forecast is for a hard freeze. The girls and I went ahead and harvested all the remaining green peppers and tomatoes from our garden and pulled up most of the plants for the compost pile. I am hoping that the tomato will ripen in our window sill over the next week or so. The green pepper were chopped with some being frozen for soup and other left to use during the week.

I have been doing some shopping over the last week and will plan to share all my deals in the next couple of days.

Saving on Saturday- 5/7/2016

sosThis project actually took us two days to complete but mainly because we had lot of other things going on at the same time. One side of the “addition” has an area of 6 inches or so from the wall that we have been attempting to grow grass in for the past three years. Last year, we bought specific “shade” grass and it still did not work. So after so talk and planning we decided to make it a flower bed. We decided not to attempt to grow vegetables in this area because it is in the shade for the majority of the day and would have a huge expense associated with it attempting to buy dirt to make sure things could grow.

I woke up bright and early Saturday morning and head out to the local “plant sale” that is by the master gardeners in the area.  In the past, I have not arrived early enough to find as much as I have wanted. This year, I arrived at 7:50am for the sale that was scheduled to start at 8.  I did miss out of a couple of specific things I was looking for but was successful over all. I focused on purchasing plants that were known to grow in the shade. I purchased 6 different shade plants for a total of $18.  As I have been looking at the front flower bed which touches this new bed, I realized that at least one of the hosta plants was too close to other plants so I decided to dig it up. I was able to spread this one plant into 5 different sections which saved at least $20. I know this plants spread and grow very quickly so by next year they should be back to the right size. After coming home and going to Zach’s soccer game, we stopped at Lowes to purchase brick blocks to line the bed and some mulch. We ended up spending $100 total for this new bed. I am so pleased and excited about this huge accomplishment.

Fun Friday-Picture overload

As  the weather was still chilly and windy,  we found several way to fill the time. First stop the aquarium.

Then we enjoyed lunch at Jimmy Buffets Margaritaville.

Finally the girls went to Build a Bear, while Zach found the ride shop to build his own car.

Favorite Cabinet

I have several “big” goals for this weekend, both in real life and on-line. We are planning to install the back splash for our kitchen. At that point, we will have completed 3 of the 4 planned steps. (The Plan).  The on-line plan is a little bit more complex.  I want to share all the wonderful features of the new kitchen in addition to a ton of features and finally have a post with the entire process via links. This post will hopefully be the first in a series.

We order new cabinets prior to removing the old one. I did not realize how badly damages and nasty aka toxic the old lower cabinets were. We literally used a shovel to remove the floor underneath due to mold and mildew. We were not able to find a cabinet to fill the last five inches before the door frame.  In addition, I regretted losing my spice cabinet. Then I searched pinterest and found the perfect solution.

imageMatt was able to construct this cabinet that perfectly fits in and total spent on it was ZERO!  He used salvaged wood from several other projects in addition to casters from an old television stand. This is my absolute favorite cabinet.

Random Thoughts Tuesday 2/16

imageWe decided to change out the window and door cases with our kitchen remodel. What we discovered is that there was no insulation around the windows. I purchased two cans of foam which is the yellow you see above.

imageAll three of the kids got “Olafs” for a special Valentine gift. They are a huge hit. I was really good at keeping these hidden.

IMG_5532.JPGKendall enjoyed the circus and even more so she enjoyed the special time with her big sister. Do you think they look alike?

January Money Diet Update

I am not surprised at all to say that several thing have occurred this month that I did not originally think about or plan for. Fortunately, we have adapted and managed to spend as little as possible. One of the bigger things that has happen is the sudden dramatic weather change that has brought us temperature not rising above freezing for several days in a row. I discovered that we had a significant draft in our living room. We were able to purchase and reduce this draft for around $20 but this was totally unplanned. Next up was a computer problem, we ended up purchasing a new operating system for one of our computers which was $130 but in addition after spending several hours working on and around this problem, Matt and I both needed a mental break and headed to Cracker Barrel for Dinner. I am honestly glad we did because after coming home it took another 3 hours to get the computer back to a workable state. I am really enjoying this diet challenge because it allows us to stop and thing before spending, even if we decide to spend the money.  Now on to more positive news.

1. Grocery spending of $200 or less- Currently I have spent $168 after both a trip to Costco and Aldi. I am so excited by this number. I don’t see any reason we can not stay in our goal for the month. We also went ahead today and did a rough menu plan for the month of February. I can see that we should be able to maintain a low budget of $400 or less for February!

2. Challenge #1– Give away 31 things- I have a box of kids clothing already packed and have a couple of options. I am going to make sure this box is gone before the end of the month.

3.Challenge #2– Figure your Net Worth-  I did not complete this totally simply because this number has no meaning to me at this point. What I have done is make a spreadsheet to keep up with real number as I work at paying off credit cards and other debits. I also know the value of all our vehicles. Finally today, I set up access to my retirement account so I can at least glance at it from time to time. As an interesting side note, it has lost over a thousand dollars in January already.

4. Challenge # 3- Do something to earn an extra $25 or more this month.– I have several items listed on Facebook for sale right now.

5. Challenge #4- Reduce at least one expense– I stay pretty on top of this to begin with. But I was able to get a $14 credit on our cable bill due, this month and finally think we have that bill straighten out. I do need to check on our cellphone bill to make sure it is as low as possible.

Overall I am happy with our progress and this challenge is definitely helping me to find some money that can be saved.
